BRITISH REGGAE SENSATIONS UB40 GET THE EAGLE MONTREUX TREATMENT

Continuing its acclaimed Live At Montreux series, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release UB40 'Live At Montreux 2002’ on CD May 15 (Eagle Records) and on DVD May 29 (Eagle Eye Media).

One of the most successful British acts of all time, Birmingham’s UB40, with personnel intact for two decades, 50 million+ in international record sales, and a string of hits nine miles wide—including two stateside #1s in “Red Red Wine” and an irresistible cover of Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling In Love”—only had one Montreux appearance. It was 2002, and the Swiss crowd soon realized the band’s penchant for not only reggae but American soul music as well. Whether covering Al Green (“Here I Am [Come And Take Me]”) or The Temptations (“The Way You Do The Things You Do”), brother guitarists Ali and Robin Campbell, keyboardist Michael Virtue, vocalist Astro, saxophonist Brian Travers, bassist Earl Falconer, percussionist Norman Hassan, drummer James Brown, and the three-man horn section of Martin Meredith, Laurence Parry and Mark Overton put that satisfying syncopated slide-pump sensibility of lazy-action reggae, soul and ska to whatever they touched.

Political without being proselytizing, the band’s lyrics always straddled that line of sophisticated acknowledgement and world-weary resignation, yet with a call to stand up and protest. It’s in their genes. The Brothers Campbell’s father is socialist folksinger Ian Campbell. A hard-hitting autobiography, Blood And Fire, chronicled two generations worth of mismanagement, drink, drugs, divorce, paranoia and prison. Onstage, though, nothing matters but the music
