HOT OFF THE PRESS:
DAN IN REAL LIFE SOUNDTRACK HITS STORES OCTOBER 2

Album features 11 New Sondre Lerche Compositions And Performances By A Fine Frenzy And Regina Spektor

On October 2nd, Capitol Music Group is set to release the original soundtrack for the upcoming Touchstone Pictures film Dan In Real Life. The soundtrack – produced by Sondre Lerche, Mitchell Leib and Dana Sano – features 13 tracks recorded exclusively for the movie, including four new songs penned by Lerche and seven cue tracks from the score, which he composed as well. The collection also includes appearances by two rising new artists: A Fine Frenzy and Regina Spektor.

Norwegian singer-songwriter Lerche’s Faces Down, landed on numerous critics’ “best of” lists, including Rolling Stone’s “The 10 Best Debut Albums” and “50 Best Albums of 2002.” His fourth and latest full-length album, Phantom Punch, has been equally well received. “Shimmering melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and chord structures that veer from Brazilian pop to punk. What more could you ask for?” asked Interview while Entertainment Weekly said it “Evokes ‘80s Britpop at its zenith, with Duran Duran-ish guitars and synths underpinning lyrically self-aware ditties like the title track.” Lerche will be supporting AIR on their upcoming U.S. dates (see below for itinerary).

Peter Hedges, the director and co-writer of Dan In Real Life, listened to 500 different artists while in pre-production for the film and kept coming back to Lerche. “The thing about Sondre’s music is that it feels timeless to me,” says Hedges. “There’s a depth to it and you feel that this is a man who believes in love. The music is just infused with that feeling without being sappy or sentimental – which made it a complete dream for this story.”

The music indeed sounds made for the movie, and it’s no accident. Lerche attended rehearsals with the actors for inspiration. The result: a set of original songs that help establish the tone for the film’s clever mix of conflicted love and family complications. For “Hell No,” Lerche tapped New York-based singer-songwriter Regina Spektor for a duet. And although the soundtrack consists mainly of brand new songs, Lerche (who appears on-screen at the end of the film) had fun with a few cover songs, too.

A Fine Frenzy, led by 22-year-old Alison Sudol who has received accolades for her atmospheric songs, turns in a searing version of the Peggy Lee classic “Fever,” which Lerche produced. (A Fine Frenzy’s debut album, One Cell In The Sea, bowed at #3 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers chart earlier this month and the band is currently on VH1’s “You Oughta Know” Tour 2007.) And Lerche covers Pete Townshend’s Top 10 hit “Let My Love Open The Door.” Rounding out the collection are three previously-released tracks: “Airport Taxi Reception” from Lerche & The Faces Down’s Phantom Punch, their cover of Elvis Costello’s “Human Hands” from Duper Sessions and “Modern Nature,” a duet with Lillian Samdal from Lerche’s Faces Down.

Comic sensation Steve Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Little Miss Sunshine, “The Office”) stars as advice columnist Dan Burns, who is an expert on relationships but somehow struggles to succeed as a brother, a son and a single parent in this heartfelt comedy from director Peter Hedges ("Pieces Of April"). Starring alongside standup star Dane Cook and Academy Award® winner Juliette Binoche, Carell is about to discover a family weekend of chaos, confusion, and love in the face of left-field surprises. Dan In Real Life opens on October 26th.
