Amy Sky Joins Mental Health Heroes
Toronto, Ontario (February 3, 2009) - Singer, songwriter, producer and mental health advocate Amy Sky is the recipient of the Mood Disorders Association of Ontario’s (MDAO) 2009 Hero Inspiration Award. Previous recipients of this prestigious award include The Honourable James K. Bartleman, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario (ret.), and Senator General Romeo Dallaire. The Hero Inspiration Award, sponsored by Shepell.fgi, pays tribute to a high-profile person with a mood disorder who publicly supports and advocates for others suffering from the devastating effects of this family of illnesses.
Ms. Sky will be presented with the award on February 7th during the MDAO’s 5th annual “Mad About You” gala at The Carlu. Ms. Sky is one of three award recipients that will be recognized at the black tie event. Others include:

• Dr. Emmanuel Persad is the recipient of the MDAO’s 2009 Hope Inspiration Award. Dr. Presad is a recognized leader in education, research and clinical psychology. The Hope Award, sponsored by Lilly Canada, honours a person who has made an outstanding contribution in the diagnosis, treatment or research of mood disorders.

• The third recipient is John Burghardt. John is the recipient of the 2009 Heart Inspiration Award. This award, sponsored by Astra Zeneca, recognizes John’s exceptional personal support for those suffering from a mood disorder. A tireless advocate, he lost his daughter Rebecca to suicide.

“Mood disorders are pervasive in our society,” says Karen Liberman, Executive Director, MDAO, “20% of the population suffers from them. Less than 20% of those will receive the help they need to return to a full and active life.” Mood disorders are highly debilitating and can lead to job loss, family break-up and suicide. While these illnesses are devastating, the social stigma that accompanies them is often more destructive. The Inspiration Awards recognize leaders in our community who are making a difference and they reflect MDAO’s commitment to building awareness and public education. The Gala is home to the Inspiration Awards and is the MDAO’s primary fund raising event. This year’s host is Canadian comic Steve Patterson.
